How to choose a gym towel: six criteria that actually matter

|365 PROJECT

Your towel is the only item that touches every machine you use. It goes with you from the bench press to the cable station, from the cables to the mat and from the mat to your bag. You choose it once and use it hundreds of times a year. That is why it deserves more than grabbing the first one in the cupboard.

These are the six criteria that separate a gym towel that supports your training from one that gets in its way.

1. Fabric: microfibre over cotton

Cotton is pleasant at home and impractical at the gym. It absorbs, but it holds on to the water, gets heavier the more you use it and takes hours to dry inside a closed bag. That built-up moisture is what ends up smelling.

Microfibre works the other way round. Its filaments are extremely fine and create a huge surface area to capture sweat, then release it quickly into the air. A good microfibre absorbs several times its own weight and is dry before your next session. If you want the full detail, we explain it in microfibre or cotton: which towel to take to the gym.

What to look for: the product page should say microfibre and state how much it absorbs. If it gives no figure, be wary.

2. Size: covering the bench without filling your bag

You will find everything out there, from 30-centimetre hand towels to beach towels that fit nowhere. For training, the useful size is one that covers a bench backrest from end to end and fits folded in your bag.

Under 80 centimetres long, your head or lower back ends up resting on the upholstery. Over 120, there is excess fabric that hangs, gets stepped on and snags. A 50 × 100 cm format covers the whole bench, works for wiping your face between sets and is still easy to handle.

3. Weight: what is light gets carried

It seems a minor criterion until you train five days a week. A cotton towel of a similar size weighs considerably more when dry, and much more when damp. You feel that difference in your bag and, above all, in how reluctant you are to carry it.

The 365 PROJECT towel weighs 250 grams. It is the kind of figure that means the towel lives in your bag instead of staying at home. And a habit holds when what you need to keep it is already prepared.

4. Grip: it stays where you put it

This is the criterion almost nobody checks and the one you notice most. A flat towel on an inclined backrest slides with the first rep. You finish the set with your back on the upholstery and the towel on the floor.

The solution is not a rougher fabric, but the shape. A hood on the underside of the towel fits over the end of the bench and holds it in place for the whole session. We go into more detail in gym towel with a bench hood: hygiene that stays put.

What to look for: the grip should be part of the towel (a hood or sewn-in sleeve), not a separate accessory that gets lost.

5. Pocket: where your keys and phone go

In a normal session you change areas several times. If your locker key, phone or earbuds are loose, every move means a mental inventory. A pocket built into the towel solves that: the essentials go with you and always in the same place.

The important detail is the zip. An open pocket lets things fall out at the first movement. With a zip, you can hang the towel, fold it or turn it over without thinking about what is inside.

6. Care: how long it will really last

A training towel is washed far more than any other item: ideally, after every use. That is why it matters to know how to look after it before you buy it. Microfibre lasts for years if washed at 40 °C maximum, without fabric softener and air-dried. With very hot water or softener, it loses absorbency within a few weeks.

If you already have one and it has stopped absorbing, it can probably be fixed. The full routine is in how to wash a microfibre towel so it lasts for years.

One more, less technical criterion: that you like carrying it

You take care of the clothes you train in, your trainers, your bag. The towel is on show for the whole session, hanging off the bench or over your shoulder. It makes sense for it to fit with everything else.

That is why our towels start from a camouflage base with colour and logo combinations: Navy, burgundy, grey, green, white and pink. It is not decoration. It is how a functional object also says something about the person carrying it.

The short list

If you have a towel in front of you and are not sure, run through this:

  • Fabric: microfibre, with a specific absorbency figure.
  • Size: enough to cover a bench backrest, around 50 × 100 cm.
  • Weight: genuinely light, so it lives in your bag.
  • Grip: a hood or built-in system that fixes it to the bench.
  • Pocket: with a zip, for keys and phone.
  • Care: washable at 40 °C and air-dried without losing performance.

365 PROJECT towels meet all six: microfibre that absorbs up to 2.5 times its weight, 250 g, 50 × 100 cm, a hood that fits over any bench, a zip pocket and a portable case to take it wherever you go.

How many you need

A towel that gets washed after every session needs a backup. Anyone who trains four or five days a week ends up working with two: one in the bag and one on the drying rack. That way you never have to choose between training with a damp towel or training without one.

That is why our two-towel packs combine two colours and include a third one free, with free shipping. A complete rotation for the whole year.
