The bench is yours for four sets. Before that, it was everyone's.
Think about how many people use a press bench in a single afternoon. Each one leaves sweat, heat and direct skin contact on the same upholstery. Studies of gym surfaces confirm it time and again: shared equipment builds up bacterial concentrations far higher than most everyday objects, and some studies have counted more than a million germs per square centimetre on training machines.
There is no need for alarm. There is a need for method. In humid, high-traffic environments, skin conditions such as folliculitis or ringworm find the conditions they need. The simplest, most effective barrier is still the same as ever: a towel between your skin and the surface. That is why most gyms make it part of their rules.
The problem: a towel that will not stay in place
Anyone who trains on a bench knows the scene. You lay the towel over the backrest, do your first set, and when you sit up the towel comes down with you. You put it back. Second set: on the floor again. In the end, the towel that was supposed to protect you is being trodden on next to the bench, and your back is resting directly on the upholstery.
A flat towel cannot fix this, because it has nothing to hold on with. A bench backrest is smooth, inclined and narrow: any loose fabric slides with the friction of your back. It is not a problem of attention; it is a problem of design.
The solution: a hood on the underside that fixes to the bench
The answer lies in changing the geometry, not the material. The 365 PROJECT towel has a hood on its underside: a sewn pocket that fits over the end of the bench, like a cover. Once in place, the towel is anchored by its own fit. It fits any bench and does not slip, whether on the incline press or on seated pulldowns.
What changes in practice
- Continuous hygiene: the barrier between your skin and the upholstery holds for the whole session, not just the first set.
- Stability: your back always rests on the same fabric, with no creases or sliding mid-rep.
- Focus: you cut out the constant readjusting. Between sets, you rest or prepare the next one; the towel is no longer part of the conversation.
The other front: where you leave what you carry
There is a second source of distraction in any session: keys, phone, earbuds. Scattered across the floor, on top of the next machine, inside a trainer. Every time you change station, a mental inventory.
That is why the same towel has a zip pocket. The essentials travel with you from bench to bench, secured and easy to find. It is not a decorative extra: it is the difference between an orderly session and a session spent keeping an eye on your things.
Light enough for the gym, not built for the towel rail
A functional bench towel has to cover the whole backrest and still not take over your bag. Microfibre makes that possible: 250 grams, absorbency of up to 2.5 times its weight in moisture and quick drying between sessions. In its portable case, it takes up the space of a slim book. You carry it every day because carrying it costs nothing. And consistency is built exactly like that, by removing friction from what you repeat every day.
How to use it properly
- Fit the hood over the top end of the bench before your first set and spread the rest over the backrest and seat.
- Use the top side to lean on and dry yourself with a free end; that way the part touching the bench and the part touching your face are not the same.
- Keep only what you need during the session in the zip pocket: keys, phone, earbuds.
- When you finish, do not leave it damp in your bag: spread it out when you get home and wash it after every use.
A small habit, repeated all year
Covering the bench is not fussiness: it is respect for your skin, for your training and for the next person who sits down. The habits that sustain a year of training are not spectacular; they are precise. A towel that stays where you put it is one of them.
