A gym towel smells because the bacteria on your skin break down the sweat and oils left in the fabric, and they do it much faster when the towel spends hours damp inside your bag. To stop it, do two things: dry it as soon as you get home and wash it properly, without fabric softener.
Here is what causes the smell, how often to wash your gym towel, how to dry a microfibre towel fast and what to do when the smell has already set in.
What makes a gym towel smell
Fresh sweat barely smells. It is mostly water and salts. The smell appears when the bacteria that normally live on your skin break down the fats and proteins in sweat and release volatile compounds.
They need three things: organic matter, moisture and time. A gym towel offers all three. It collects sweat from your face, neck and hands, touches benches and machines, and then usually ends up rolled up in a closed bag.
The fabric matters too. A study from Ghent University published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology in 2014 analysed the shirts of 26 people after an indoor cycling session. After 28 hours, the polyester shirts smelled more intense than the cotton ones, and they carried micrococci, bacteria linked to the strongest odours. Microfibre is polyester. Its advantage is that it dries very fast, and that advantage only works if you let it dry.
The most common mistake: putting it away damp
Most towels do not smell from a lack of washing. They smell from the hours they spend damp between the gym and the washing machine. Three hours in a closed bag do more damage than the whole workout.
- Take it out of your bag when you get home, every time, even if you will not wash it that day.
- Spread it out. Balled up in the laundry basket, it never dries on the inside.
- Do not leave it for hours in a closed plastic bag.
- The pouch is for carrying it, not for storing it wet.
How often to wash your gym towel
After every session in which you used it to wipe off sweat. It has touched your skin and shared surfaces, and using it again the next day puts back on your skin what it picked up.
If you train four or five days a week, that means keeping more than one towel in rotation: one in use and one drying after the wash. It is the simplest way to never leave home with a towel that has not fully dried.
How to dry a microfibre towel fast
Microfibre dries much faster than cotton, but only if it gets air.
- Wring it out well when it comes out of the machine and hang it open, not folded.
- Look for airflow: near a window or on a drying rack with space around it, not squeezed between other clothes.
- Avoid a hot tumble dryer and the iron. Heat damages the fibre.
- Only put it away when it is completely dry, including the seams and the pocket.
The difference between fabrics is explained in microfibre or cotton for the gym.
How to wash it so the smell does not come back
Washing is about removing oil and residue, not adding fragrance. Three habits get in the way.
- Fabric softener. It coats the fibre, reduces absorption and traps residue. Never on microfibre.
- Too much detergent. Whatever does not rinse out stays in the fabric. Use a normal dose and do not overload the drum.
- Wet laundry left in the drum. An hour in a closed drum recreates the bag problem. Hang it as soon as the cycle ends.
Washing it with items that shed lint, such as cotton towels, also makes it less effective, because microfibre traps those fibres. The full steps are in how to wash a microfibre towel.
How to get the smell out of a microfibre towel
If the towel comes out of the machine clean and smells again as soon as it gets wet, the residue is old and a normal wash no longer reaches it.
- Soak it for an hour in cold water, without detergent, to loosen the residue.
- Wash it on its own or with other microfibre items, with a normal dose of detergent and no softener.
- Add an extra rinse if your machine allows it.
- Air dry it until it is completely dry.
Turning the temperature up to force the result does not help. According to the European Environment Agency, high temperatures and long cycles damage the structure of synthetic fabrics and increase fibre shedding. You lose towel without solving the problem.
Causes of the smell and what to do about each
| Cause | What to do |
|---|---|
| Hours damp inside the bag | Take it out and spread it when you get home |
| Fabric softener residue | Always wash without softener |
| Too much detergent | Normal dose and an extra rinse |
| Put away half dry | Store it only when fully dry |
| Used several days in a row | Wash after every session and rotate two towels |
The 365 PROJECT towel, made to dry fast
The 365 PROJECT towel is 100% polyester microfibre, weighs 250 grams and absorbs up to 2.5 times its weight. Being light, it dries fast as soon as you hang it. It comes with a travel pouch so it does not float loose among your clothes in the bag, and a hood on the back that hooks onto the bench so it does not fall onto the gym floor.
To train with a clean towel every day, rotation is the practical answer: in the packs, buy two towels and the third is free, from the original designs, with free shipping.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my towel smell even when it has just been washed?
Because old residue from sweat, detergent or softener is still in the fibre. When sweat wets it again, the bacteria get back to work. A cold soak and a wash without softener usually fix it.
Can I use fabric softener on a microfibre towel?
No. It coats the fibre, reduces absorption and holds on to the smell.
How often should I wash my gym towel?
After every session in which you use it to dry off. If you train several days in a row, rotate at least two towels.
Can it go in the tumble dryer?
Air drying is better. If you use a dryer, keep it on low heat, because high heat damages microfibre.
